Need your support for a noble cause

XSA has been referred with a new case for help: Money to build house and Raise money for marriage for a young poor girl

Referred by: Kavya Gopi 1999-03 batch.

Details:  The girl is from a village in near Cochin, whose situation is very bad. Her mother is blind and father is mentally ill and is literally locked up in a room when he goes into his mood swings. With the support from various families in the neighbourhood she studied till M.Com. Currently she is working in an office but gets only a meagre salary of is.3000/-. With that she has to manage her bus fare, medicines for her parents and other household expenses. The plight of the young girl is really sad. She has to support the family and ensure her safety.

They are living in a small house which was built nearly 70yrs before when they got the land as kudikidappu right (The Govt Act which gives the land to the tenant if they have been staying there for N years and are below poverty line). Now the house is crumbling down. We would like to help them to rebuild their house and get her married.

Financials3L to build a 1BHK home

Requesting your kind and generous donations for this case. For more details on the case, you could contact Sanish (ns.sanish@gmail.com) or Kavya (kavyagopi@gmail.com)

Those of you would like to help may transfer the contribution to XSA's account mentioned below and send a mail to our treasurer, nirmal.unnikrishnan@wipro.com.

XSA: Fund Raising for Scholarship for Students of MEC

Dear Friends
A new semester begins in July and time for the alumni to come together to raise funds for the scholarships for current year. Last year, we gave scholarship of Rs. 20,000/- each to six students from the then 3rd and 5th semesters. This year, we wish to extend the scholarship to 5 more students from the current 3rd Sem students. So in total, we would be giving 11 scholarships. This would require a sum of at least Rs 2,20,000/- to be raised. I am sure given the alumni strength and the positions many of us are at, this can be raised very easily

To repeat, the salient points on the scholarship are:
- The students who were offered scholarship last year would continue to get the same in the current year
- The new students would be selected among the 2nd year
- The quantum of the scholarship is Rs 20,000/- per student
- The scholarship would be given annually till completion of course
- The guidelines for student selection would be determined between XSA and the college

We request you to send your contribution to the following account:
Account No.:       67101191210 (current account)
Name of Account:   XMEC SOCIAL ASSIST
Bank:              State Bank of Travancore
Branch:            Cochin University Campus Branch
IFSC No.:          SBTR0000235

Please keep Nirmal U (Treasurer) and Jobil Louis on the funds transferred to the account. Their contact details are:
Nirmal U: nirmal.unnikrishnan@wipro.com   +91-94465-75475
Jobil Louis: jobillouisjoseph@gmail.com  +91-99953-36658

It would be great if any of you individually / as a group / as a batch would want to sponsor full or partial scholarships. If you are interested, please drop me a mail (george.c.kuriakose@sc.com) and we can take it forward.
Looking forward to your support in this great step forward from XMEC

XSA goes "Social" and a fun campaign

Hi All

XMEC Social Assist goes “Social”.

Now XSA has a page of its own on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/XMECSocialAssist  and also a blog page http://xmecsocialassist.blogspot.com/.

All future endeavours and updates would be posted at both the blog and the facebook page. Currently the facebook page is close to having 100 fans. The page will give a good forum for interaction with you on the various activities and to have your feedbacks and suggestion to enhance XSA’s activities. There are over 2000 XMECians out in the world with more than 50% accessing facebook. We would like to have most of the XMECians to be fans of XSA and thus spread the good word across

For all past XSA activities, please go through the blog: http://xmecsocialassist.blogspot.com

Fun Campaign for facebook page:

We are trying to get as many XMECians as possible to be Fans of the XSA page on facebook and would be working on that during the month of May and June. To make this interesting there are a couple of challenges

1)      Predict the “Number of Fans”: All you have to do is to go to XSA page on facebook and click on the “Like” button and give your prediction for number of Fans that we would reach by midnight of 30th June, 2011 (IST). Predictions are to be made by 15th May. (Existing fans can also predict the number by posting it on the page)

The best predictor would win cash prize (amount to be declared later). So go ahead and make your predictions

2)      Contribute to XSA: To make this campaign interesting, need volunteers to donate to XSA based on the number of fans reached by midnight of 30th June, 2011 (IST). So you can commit to donate Re x/- per fan and keep a cap on it. We have a volunteer ready to donate Rs 1/- per fan subject to a cap of Rs 1000/-. You can decide on the amount per fan and the cap for the maximum donation.

Calling for volunteers to make the campaign more interesting

Thanks and Regards

XMEC Initiatives - 2011

Dear XMECians,

Over the past one year there has been few initiatives taking shape, mostly initiated by smaller groups of XMECians. We thought that it would be a good time to let everyone know what has been going on and make some of these initiatives more broad based.

XMEC Social Assist - XSA has already been doing a great job with limited resources they have for the past many years. Last year we had raised funds for five patients and had a fund raising effort aimed at providing scholarship for MEC students. Thanks to all the XMECians who responded enthusiastically to their call, the scholarship is operational now. Please visit and be fans of the XSA group on facebook to appreciate the team’s efforts. The ground work for this year’s scholarship has already started.
XSA would be approaching us soon with more details and please make sure that we make the scholarship scheme a great success. The programme can be sustained only if we can continue to raise funds, or better still, raise enough money to setup a corpus fund to keep it going.
Great job team XSA - Ashley Jose , George C Kuriakose, Nirmal Unnikrishnan, Pramod P G, Rajesh M V, Roshni Firoz, Sanish N S, Shabana Musthafa
XMECian newsletter - I am sure all of you have been receiving XMECian (previously Bangalore Gazette), the newsletter published by the Bangalore based 2K9 batch of XMECians, which is informative as well as entertaining. Looking at its success, we had requested them to increase the coverage to all the regions and they agreed to do that. This however would require a lot of coordination, and we would be needing volunteers in each regional chapter to ensure that we have enough content to keep it going. We welcome any content that is relevant to this group and could be on topics on technical, management, fiction, humour etc., and encourage those who have a flair for writing (or even lack of it) to generously contribute to make this a bigger success.
Team XMECian would be getting back to us requesting for volunteers and for content.
Thank you team XMECian for agreeing to make it a global news letter - Cijo George, Cyriac, Harisankar, Nitin Jose, Nubin Stanley, Rahul Pisharody, Ravi, Roshan Roy, Thejus Krishna, Mathew Manavalan, Scaria, Vishnu sugadhan, Vyas
xmec4mec – This is a new initiative from Nandana Dutt and Saju Sivaji that is being piloted now. The students have formed a cell by name Alumni Interactive Cell (AIC), which is going be our primary interface with college. xmec4mec has been working closely with the AIC to chart out various activities that could be taken up as part of this initiative (mentoring, guest lectures, mock interviews, resume reviews etc. to name a few).
Team xmec4mec would be contacting us soon regarding their activities and hoping that many of us would be signing up for various activities
AIC team presently consists of Ann Maria Jose, Cinash P, Nithin A Valentine, Sebin Kuriakose, Toby Babu (all placement committee members), Manu Sreenivasan and Vyas
XMEC website - One of the key items on our plate was getting the XMEC website up and running again, and that work is in progress. The present effort has been carried out with effort from students as well as some alumni members during their spare time. Based on the functionalities we manage to build, we may move of some or all of the forums above to our website.
Those who have ideas/suggestions on the XMEC website or are willing to help out with it, please contact Vyas
XMEC/AAMEC meeting – While meeting of the regional chapters have been going for many years now, it is high time that we met officially (For those who are not aware, we have an official alumni association called AAMEC – Alumni Association of MEC – which has been defunct for many years now). Principal (Dr. Sureshkumar P) has agreed to host the meeting at MEC in December 2011 (tentative).
We shall be confirming the event soon and hope that many of us can make it to the event.
Please feel free to email us at xmec with comments and suggestions.

Thanks,
On behalf of XMEC alumni executive committee,
Manu Sreenivasan

Hi all,

XSA has been referred with a new case for help: 10 month old baby who was born deaf

Treatment: Cochlea Transplantation

Financial help for a student suffering from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (blood cancer)

Hi All

Over the years XSA has been able to help out a number of individuals during their times of pain, especially on medical requirements. This has all been possible based on the donations from the alumni of MEC.

We have been able to consolidate the efforts over the last couple of years in a temporary blog site: http://xmecsocialassist.blogspot.com/.

Let us pitch in our bit to help out the less unfortunate in our society. Please be assured that one of the XSA committee members verifies the genuineness of each case presented across to the alumni

Please refer below for details of the person we are helping out currently. Looking forward to all your support for the initiatives of XSA.

Hi all,

A +2 student of Bharathiya Vidhya Bhavan Thrissur, Ashish G. Nair has
been diagnosed with blood cancer. His case was referred to XSA by
Navin Babu of 99-03 batch. Anish's family consists of his dad (who is

Scholarships handed over to Students of MEC

Dear Friends

Yesterday, our esteemed Principal, Dr P Sureshkumar handed over the XMEC Alumni Scholarship to 6 students in the presence of staff and students. Nirmal Unnikrishnan from XSA was also present during the function

We had set a target of raising Rs 1 Lac to provide scholarships to 5 students during the current year. We had been able to raise an amount of almost Rs 2 Lacs. Hence we were able to add one more student as a beneficiary keeping the balance for coming years. Thanks to all the donors

The students were selected based on a combination of merit and means. I would like to thank Minimol B (staff and also alumni of 1993 batch) along with other staff in helping us through the selection process.

Once again, I thank all of you in participating and making this endeavor a success. We look forward to your help, guidance and contributions for all XSA activities

Update from XSA - Lenin

As some of you might remember, XSA had sent a request to the community
regarding Lenin, who is suffering from single vessel coronary artery
disease. I am glad to say that we have handed over 25k to Lenin's
family. Thanks a lot to everyone who supported.

At Lenin's home, the condition is not getting any better. Lenin's
mother got admitted in hospital due to heart problems. Lenin again
went to work and lifted heavy loads, which didn't go well with his
treatment. Right now his monthly medical bills come up to 3000/-. As
of now no decision on the surgery is taken.

Thanks to everyone who contributed so far for both the cases. We will be moving all the contributions received so far to Lenin's case.

Volunteers for XSA - Mon Nov 22, 2010

Dear Friends

We are making good progress with regards to selection of students for the Scholarship. We plan to complete this and award the scholarship before end of the year

Now as we move towards the New Year, we would like to expand the activities of XSA with help of all the alumni. The total number of students for scholarship for next year would be at least double of the current year. We would like to make use of XSA as a conduit for the donations you would like to make to the society. XSA would be able to verify the credentials of the requests so that everyone is sure of the genuineness of the cases put forward to the XMEC group.

Hence to take forward the above activities in a much larger scale, we would need more volunteers to help us. So, if you have some time to spare (a maximum of 10-20Hrs a month) and want to contribute towards the betterment of the society, please contact us and we could work together. Would be very happy if 1-2 people around Ernakulam could volunteer for the activities

Some of the activities planned for next year are:
-       Registering the society under IT for tax deduction benefits
-       Identifying and validating the donation requests received
-       Fund Raising for the scholarship and non-scholarship activities

As always, XSA is open to your suggestions and feedback on its activities. Please feel free to drop a note to any of the core-committee members (email id given below) to get more details

Update on Arevindh Sidhu - Sun Sep 12, 2010

Hi everyone,

Hope all of you remember the case of Arevindh Sidhu (severe growth
hormone deficiency) that XSA had handled in the past. We received
generous contribution from most of you guys. We are happy to announce
that he completed his treatment After almost 5 years of treatment, he
has increased his weight from 18.5kgs to 52kgs & height from 118cms to
162cms. Attached is the mail we received from Arevindh's father
conveying their gratitude. Below is a brief background for those of
you who are not aware of Arevindh's case.

Arevindh was suffering from severe growth hormone deficiency. The
treatment was started 5 years back. There was a risk of his bones
getting degenerated if adequate treatment was not provided. That is
when they considered doing hormone therapy for Arevindh. Initially the
monthly expense for medicine was around 35k, which was steadily
increasing based on his development and increasing of dosage. They
were seeking help from several organizations and generous people for
meeting the necessary finance for medicines. XSA's role was to support
them financially whenever they ran short of funds, after collecting
the amount from XMEC.

FW: Scholarship Fund for Students of MEC from XSA - Thu Jun 24, 2010

Dear Friends

Once again, it gives us an immense pleasure to share the good news of reaching our objective of raising Rs 1 Lac to provide scholarship for 5 students in MEC for the current academic year.

The 1993 batch and XMEC Singapore have sponsored one student each and have committed to take this forward every year. Hence from third year, three students each would be sponsored by them. There have also been a few individual sponsorship for the full fees of one student each. We hope that they would be able to continue the effort in the coming years also. There have also been numerous donations from people across the batches

Once again, on behalf of XSA I would thank everyone who has come forward to make this endeavor a success.

Our next objectives on the scholarship scheme are:
-          We are discussing with principle with regards to student selection. We plan to complete this before the next semester begins
-          Work towards building a corpus for the scholarships in the coming years. The next year target would be to give scholarship to 10 students.

Hence, your donations & suggestions for the scholarship program is still welcome (I am sure some of you might have just lost the previous mail in midst of the busy day-to-day activities).

Request you to forward this message to your respective batch yahoogroups

Scholorship Fund @MEC-An appeal to all MECians - Tue May 18, 2010

Dear friends and students,
As everybody has come to know about by this time, XMEC Social Assist (XSA) has benn registered under charitable society acts and we have started some meaningful initiatives with it. The first and the current project is the much appreciated scholorship fund for the needy students. I do remeber with thanks, the overwhelming response on the matter of a student that I have presented before the alumni. We could finally help her to bare the fees and it was a great contribution.
I think the response on the current and some more big budget proposal for our alumni scholorship program should come with some more enthusiasm. We are very much thankful to the fact that many group and individual offers are in line. I request each and every one of you to have a some more better response and contributions either as individuls/year wise/class wise with voluntary leadership from some of you.
When I have visited many of the prestigious institutes, it was really amazing to notice the contribution of alumni in many of the areas of development of the institute. Ofcourse, it can be possible with appropriate administrative support too.
The scholrship program is one among the best project that we could take up. Our alumni, fortunately is one among the strong in all aspects. They are doing a wonderful contribution in the placement activities. The scholorship is also a requirement in fact. Being here I can tell you that there are really needy and exellant guys, require a loving helping hand from us, which we can do with minimum contributions from an individual.
I have prepared the formalities of opening a joint acount with the college and XSA exclussively for this. It is the time for us to raise the amount now. It is my dream that we could do it before I join College of Engineering Cherthala due to the transfer I got just now. (As I will be operating from Cochin only, it will not affect the duties I could do for XSA here). But being here make some sense, I think.

SO MY VERY DEAR ALUMNI MEMBERS, KINDLY CONTRIBUTE TO MATERIALIZE OU DREAM OF AN ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP @ MEC.

The details of the acount is:
Account No.: 67101191210 (current account)
Name of Account: XMEC SOCIAL ASSIST
Bank: State Bank of Travancore
Branch: Cochin University Campus Branch
IFSC No.: SBTR0000235

Whenever you contribute, pl let us know it if you don't mind disclosing the identity.
Thanks and regards,
rajesh

FW: Scholarship Fund for Students of MEC from XSA - An update - Thu Apr 29, 2010

Hi All

Thanks for the words of support and commitments for donations from many of you. We are happy to say that we have received commitments for 3 scholarships already. This means that we have crossed the 50% mark for this year’s scholarship.

We have started discussion with Principal on the process for selecting the students. The major guidelines on student selection would be:
-          Family income of the student
-          Academics of the student
-          For the current year, we would select 5 students across 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students. From next year, it would be from the 2nd year students

We would like to call upon each one of you to take the small effort to help out the current students of your alma mater. Please contribute to this effort generously. Let us make this the biggest project from the alumni to the college

Good news for people in USA
Pramodkumar PG (batch of 2002 and XSA council member) is in USA. He has volunteered to take in the collection in USA. So you could transfer funds to him in USA and he in turn would transfer it to the XSA account in India. He can be contacted at +1-408 912 6036 or via email: pg.pramod@..., pramodpg@...

Please feel free to contact any one of us for further information on this

Scholarship Fund for Students of MEC from XSA - Sat Apr 17, 2010

Dear Friends

It is with immense pleasure that we would like to share the happy news that XMEC Social Assist now has a bank account of its own. You would already have known that XMEC Social Assist is a registered society. Given that the council members were spread out across the globe, it took us some time to have the account opened. This gives us a better official status among the alumni and external organizations (college, etc)

It also gives us the opportunity to initiate the Scholarship fund for the students of the college. We are working with Principle and staff to roll this out from the next academic year (2010 – 11). The plan is to start with scholarship for 5 students with an amount of Rs 20,000/- each. Towards this a quantum of Rs 1,00,000/- would be required during the year.

Creating a scholarship fund for the students of our alumni has been a dream of many of us out there in the corporate world. Hence let us take this initiative as the starting point for the road ahead. Some salient points on the scholarship for the current year:
-         The students would be selected among the ones from 2nd to 4th year (so as not to lose out on any deserving student).
-         The quantum of the scholarship is Rs 20,000/- per student
-         The scholarship would be given annually till completion of course
-         Any excess funds received would be put into fixed deposit for next year’s scholarship
-         The guidelines for student selection would be determined between XSA and the college
-         From next year, students of year 2 would be selected for the scholarship

It would be great if any of you individually / as a group / as a batch would want to sponsor full or partial scholarships. If you are interested, please drop me a mail (george.c.kuriakose@...) and we can take it forward

Update and Call for continued help for Arevindh - Fri Aug 28, 2009

Hi Everyone,

This mail comes as an update on Arevindh as well as a call for continued financial support for his treatment.

Arevindh, as most of you know, suffers from "Severe Growth Hormone Deficiency". He is currently undergoing a treatment for the same and has shown tremendous progress. He looked like a six year old at the age of 14 (3 years back), has now gained height and weight enabling him to be as independent as never before. Earlier his friends used to carry his school bag for him but now he manages to reach school on his own. He is currently studying 12th std at Model Technical school.

XSA have been providing continuous support to him for the past 3 years (since the treatment started). The cost of the medication that he is taking is 42k for a period of one month. He gets help from other sources and come to us when they face issues on obtaining funds. And we have been helping him to the extent possible.

Arevindh has approached us again with request for help. Currently they have medicines only until September 10th.

We request you all to contribute generously to this cause. A small contribution from each one of us can make a big difference in Arevindh's Life.

XSA membership and your contributions - Fri Aug 14, 2009

Hi everyone,

We are happy to inform that Manu Sreenivasan, President of XMEC and Batch of 1993 inaugurated the membership drive of XSA and became the first life member at the alumni meet. Have you taken the membership of XSA? Let us do our small bit to help the current MECians and the society at large.

The membership form is also attached for you to complete and send. The membership entitles you to vote / stand for elections to the governing council apart from more active participation in XSA activities. Anyway, you are also free to contribute without being a member.

We are also currently helping two people:
1)      Help Biju walk again. Referred by Roshini Firoz (CE 99-03)
Biju a 26yr old young man, met with a bike accident 4.5 yrs ago which caused severe damage to his Spinal disc, costing him his ability to walk. He needs to undergo an operation of the Spinal Disc at Medical Trust, Ernakulam

Dr Ravindran @ Medical Trust hospital has agreed to do the operation on the disc to revive his right leg at a cost of Rs 70,000/- . They currently have Rs 20,000/- and hence an additional Rs 50,000/- is required for the operation. Biju being from a very poor family in Aluva cannot afford to pay this. Biju's father had stopped working because of his ill health; his mother works as domestic help; and his elder brother met with an accident at his work place as a result of which his toes were amputated

We have been able to collect only Rs. 15,000/- till date for Biju.

2)      Helping Lekha to build a house. Referred by Julie Philip (CE 91-95)
Lekha had started constructing a house with some money received from the Panchayat. But that has just been enough to do the foundation. Her financial situation is really bad with a chronically diabetic husband, old parents, a married and separated elder sister with three children, and all living under one roof. With nine mouths to feed, she is struggling to raise money for their daily needs. Lekha does door to door selling (cleaning solution) for a living.

Julie had already provided some financial help and is personally checking the utilization of funds. The construction has reached the lintel level. We have been able to collect only Rs 5,500/- till date for Lekha.

Let us do our best to help Biju walk and Lekha have a roof over her head. Send your contributions to the following account
Name: Ashley Jose
A/C No: 004001502155
Bank: ICICI Bank, Madhapur, Hyderabad
IFSC: ICIC0000040
Also send a mail to ns.sanish@gmail.com giving details of the funds transfer (amount and beneficiary (Biju and / or Lekha) and the filled up application form

Our next agenda is to work out a scholarship scheme for current college students. We would send out the details as soon it is finalized with the college
